The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) once again proved that innovation thrives where purpose meets passion. Two of its groundbreaking innovations captured the spotlight during the 2025 Department of Science and Technology – Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST–TAPI) Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits by Cluster (ClusteRICE) Mindanao Cluster, held on October 7–8, 2025, at the Philippine Science High School – Central Mindanao Campus, Lanao del Norte.

The ZapPify Team, led by Mr. Keno M. Mendoza, together with Engr. Filmann T. Simpao, Dr. Orvil M. Basug, Mr. Rolando P. Villotes, Mr. Gregorio S. Gelmo, Dr. Rec E. Eguia, Dr. Larry V. Aceres, and Mr. Kim D. Andripa, earned the LIKHA Award for Outstanding Creative Research (Government-Funded) for their innovation, ZapPify: IoT-Based Insect Pest Management System for Rice Fields. Designed to address one of rice farming’s most persistent challenges, the rice black bug, ZapPify fuses science and ingenuity into a powerful solution that not only protects crops but also safeguards farmers’ livelihoods. By integrating IoT technology, the system automates pest detection and control, reducing dependence on chemical pesticides and ushering in a smarter, more sustainable future for rice production.

Equally remarkable was the Mechanical Coconut Climber Team, headed by Engr. Ryan M. Abenoja with Dr. Roger C. Montepio, Mr. Ruel F. Tuyogon, Engr. Roland R. Bayron, and Mr. Lourenze Karl C. Lanticse, who received the TUKLAS Award for Outstanding Invention (Government-Funded) for their innovation, Mechanical Coconut Climber. The device provides a safe and efficient way to climb coconut trees, transforming one of the most labor-intensive tasks in the agricultural sector. It stands as an innovation born from both empathy and practicality, empowering coconut farmers to work with greater safety, speed, and dignity while ensuring productivity and continuity in the coconut industry.

The success of both USeP teams resonated beyond the awarding stage, marking a defining moment in the University’s innovation journey. Recognized among Mindanao’s brightest innovators, the ZapPify Team, which received ₱20,000 under the LIKHA category, and the Mechanical Coconut Climber Team, which earned ₱50,000 under the TUKLAS category, are now set to bring their innovations to the national arena. As official representatives of the Mindanao Cluster in the 2026 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE), these USeP innovators carry with them the vision, excellence, and pride of the region, showcasing how ingenuity born in Mindanao can illuminate the entire nation.

At the core of these achievements is USeP’s enduring dedication to research and innovation, sustained through the guidance and support of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension (OVPRDE). Through its consistent mentorship and empowerment, the University continues to inspire its researchers and innovators to transform challenges into opportunities and ideas into transformative solutions that serve communities and shape the future.

As ClusteRICE 2025 concluded, the triumph of USeP’s innovators echoed a truth that defines the University’s spirit: real innovation is not measured by awards but by the lives it transforms. With compassion and vision, the University continues to shape a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow.
