The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP), through its Research and Development Division (R&DD), conducted the “Workshop for the Non-Teaching Personnel (NTP) in the Conduct of Research and Development Initiatives” on October 22, 2025 via Zoom, as part of its continuing efforts to build a more inclusive and research-oriented institutional culture.

Carrying the theme “Building Competence and Confidence: Strengthening NTP Roles in Advancing R&D Initiatives,” the activity brought together non-teaching personnel from different campuses of the University to deepen their understanding of research processes, documentation, coordination, and administrative support systems vital to R&D implementation.

Setting the tone for the event, Dr. Maria Luisa B. Faunillan, Vice President for Administration, delivered the message of University President Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr. She conveyed the President’s recognition of the indispensable role of non-teaching personnel in advancing USeP’s research goals, underscoring that innovation flourishes when every member of the University community moves forward with a shared sense of purpose.

Enriching the discussion, Dr. Roger C. Montepio, Vice President for Research, Development and Extension, served as keynote speaker and emphasized that research thrives through the combined efforts of those who lead and those who provide crucial support behind the scenes. Dr. Merlina H. Juruena, R&DD Director, followed with a technical input session that guided participants in improving documentation and coordination mechanisms, noting that empowering support staff strengthens the very foundation of the University’s research ecosystem.

After the discussions, participants engaged in an open forum where they exchanged insights, raised questions, and shared experiences on how non-teaching personnel can better contribute to R&D implementation. The dialogue paved the way for the succeeding highlight of the program, the consultative workshop, where participants collaboratively identified challenges and proposed practical solutions, such as establishing incentive mechanisms, clarifying engagement guidelines for staff, and improving digital coordination systems, reflecting their proactive commitment to strengthening the University’s research processes.

Feedback from participants reflected overwhelming appreciation for the activity. Many described the workshop as “empowering, insightful, and well-organized,” noting that it helped them better understand how their day-to-day tasks connect to the larger research mission of the University, strengthening their sense of purpose and belonging in the R&D community.

The event concluded with Mr. Robert C. Satorre, President of the Non-Teaching Staff Association (NTSA), expressing his appreciation for the R&DD’s inclusive and collaborative approach in driving research initiatives, highlighting that every staff member plays a meaningful role as a catalyst for innovation.

Through initiatives like this, USeP continues to uphold its vision of becoming a Premier Research University transforming communities in the ASEAN and beyond, cultivating a culture where competence and confidence empower every staff member to be a true partner in research and innovation.
