Singapore, December 2, 2024– A group of 30 Master of Arts in Mathematics Education (MAME) students from the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) recently embarked on an international educational tour in Singapore and Malaysia from November 29 to December 7, 2024. Led by program head Dr. Roar A. Callaman and Associate Professor Yvonne M. Kiel, the delegation explored innovative practices and identify issues, trends, and best practices in mathematics education.
The first stop of the educational tour was the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Singapore, where renowned Mathematics education expert Dr.Toh Tin Lam delivered an engaging lecture on Singapore’s efforts in providing to provide high-quality Mathematics teaching. Toh highlighted the vision of NIE’s Mathematics and Mathematics Education group to establish a world-class symbiosis between mathematicians and Mathematics educators. Their mission focuses on nurturing Mathematics educators through rigorous research and exemplary teaching.
Key points from the discussion included:
– The importance of rigor in learning Mathematics content.
– Strengthening links between university-level and school-level Mathematics.
– Promoting computational thinking skills as a cornerstone of Singapore’s Mathematics curriculum, with problem-solving at its
core.
– The need for teachers to excel in both content knowledge and pedagogy.
This visit provided participants with invaluable insights into Singapore’s cutting-edge approaches to Mathematics education, setting the tone for the rest of the program.
The group will be visiting three universities in Malaysia: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia on December 4, 2024, Universiti Malaya on December 5, 2024 and Universiti Teknologi MARA on December 6, 2024.
