There is beauty in every religion when their principles align with the goodness of humanity.
Beyond books, journals, and traditional classroom discussions, the essence of learning continues through experiencing real-world cultures. Amidst the cold, rainy afternoon of February 26, 2026, students, faculty, and staff came together in Room 209-210 of the ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐๐ฌ (๐๐๐) building to witness the tradition and significance of the ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ง and the ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐จ ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ in person as the ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ค๐ continues in its second year.
โ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ค๐โ, or โ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฌ๐ญโ, comes from the Tausug word โ๐๐ฎ๐ค๐โ, which means โ๐ญ๐จ ๐จ๐ฉ๐๐งโ or โ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐คโ, therefore interpreted as the end of fasting after a sunset in Ramadan. The season of ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ง is a moment of reflection and prayer for the ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฌ as they live and abide by the teachings in the ๐๐ฎ๐ซ’๐๐ง, reaffirming their faith and giving thanks to ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ก for His grace. It is also a safe space where people of different faiths gather together to reflect and share their insights and values through a meal, celebrating diversity and encouraging mutual respect between each other.
โ[๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ค๐] is a testament that we are for inclusivity, so regardless of your religion, of your faith, of your ๐๐๐๐ง, we recognize, we give justice to your being as a human person,โ says ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐.
(This is not only a simple celebration, but it is also a colorful gathering because we are here and we come from different [ethnic] groups, especially that we come from different sectors.)
The project, which was made in partnership with the ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌโ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ญ๐ฒ (๐๐๐) and the ๐๐๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (๐๐) program of the ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ข๐๐ง๐๐๐ฌ (๐๐๐), was originally intended as a supplementary learning resource for students who are enrolled in the ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ – ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ course, but its purpose goes deeper than that. Following its successful run last year, the ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ค๐ continues to spread knowledge about the Islamic way of life as a testament of the Universityโs commitment towards an inclusive education, bringing the ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ง๐๐จ๐๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ closer for the people to see its wonders. It has since broadened its audience, inviting more students who showed interest in partaking in an enlightening conversation.
As the students waited for the ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ (๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ง๐ฌ๐๐ญ) to come through, they took every lecture as an opportunity to take notes and listen eagerly in silence, deepening their knowledge about Islam. This time, two Muslim scholars willingly took the time to impart their knowledge on the significance of ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ง and the ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐จ ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐, aiming to break the stereotypes by correcting the common misconceptions about the religion in this life-changing activity.
๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐ญ and motivational speaker ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐๐ก ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ซ, who was also the keynote speaker of last year’s ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ค๐, returns to USeP to graciously share his wisdom on the sacredness and importance of fasting in ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ง and the ๐
๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ฅ๐๐ฆ. He shares that, while Ramadan is still meant to test our faith, obedience, and discipline by discernment and resistance against the temptation of sin, there are a few exceptions that may allow people to not fast due to some circumstances, showing the merciful side of the religion. Even so, he reminds everyone about the true spirit of Ramadan, that it is not only an act of obedience, but also an act of gratitude for His guidance.
โAng tunay na diwa why we are fasting in the month of Ramadan, we are happy and celebrating that in this month, guidance is available for humanity (The true spirit behind our fasting in the month of Ramadan is because we are happy and we are celebrating that in this month, guidance is available for humanity),โ he said.
Meanwhile, ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐๐ก๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ-๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ ๐๐๐ง ๐๐ข๐ฆ, who served the Bangsamoro community as a ๐๐๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ, shares that the necessity of an independent government in the ๐๐๐๐๐ region aligns itself with the Islamic values of justice, mercy, accountability, integrity, and service to the vulnerable that the community needs. She also reminds the interfaith community to uphold the Islamic faith and humanitarian values by holding ourselves accountable in all our actions, not only for the family or for the community, but also for Allah.
โWhat you practice, you preach, and what you preach, you practice. What you intend, you do, and what you do, you intend,โ she said.
The ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ค๐ became a perfect opportunity for everyone to open their minds and reflect on these lessons as the speakers took the time to address some relevant questions from the audience, such as seeking forgiveness and the moral dilemma of children in Muslim families. In return, the audience also expressed their appreciation towards the speakers for enlightening everyone about the goodness of Islam.
What makes this yearโs event more interesting lies in its timely coincidence: as both the ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ง and the ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ง ๐ฌ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง started in the same month this year, witnessing a moment that happens once in a blue moon becomes more meaningful to ponder into the significance of their shared values. Besides respecting each otherโs cultures and traditions, many religious leaders have been calling for an interfaith dialogue, prayer, and reflection between ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฌ and ๐๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ง๐ฌ despite the striking differences in their beliefs.
At 5:51 PM, everyone stood together in solemnity when the ๐๐๐ง๐ (call to prayer) came, which marks the end of fasting. Many non-Muslim members joined in solidarity as our Muslim brothers and sisters expressed their sincere devotion towards Allah, uniting everyone through prayer and thanksgiving. This was followed by the ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ซ, which was generously prepared as an ๐๐๐ญ ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐ช๐๐ก (๐๐ก๐๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ) through the ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐๐๐ก๐ ๐.
๐๐๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐จ, symbolizing the Islamic duty of charity and service to others.
As the ๐๐๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ took charge of the food distribution, everyone lined up outside the room, waiting patiently for the food to be served. Excitement was written all over each otherโs faces, curious about the variety of Bangsamoro delicacies and what each of it tastes like. Thereโs the signature ๐ญ๐ข๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ก ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฆ, the creamy chicken in white sauce, the twisty flavor of spicy mango chicken, the ๐ฉ๐ข๐ฒ๐๐ง๐ ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ฎ๐ค, the savory beef rendang, the beef caldereta, the garlic shrimp, the mixed seafood, and the tuna fish fillet. There were also well-known Tausug glutinous delicacies such as ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ข ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐๐ข, ๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ, and ๐ญ๐๐๐ข๐-๐ญ๐๐๐ข๐, and fruits such as watermelon and grapes, which added more delight to the cuisine. While everyone had their fill of the meal with laughter and amazement, ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐๐ก ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐ฏ๐ข๐๐ซ, together with ๐๐ซ๐จ๐. ๐๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ง and ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฆ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ฌ, remained in the room and prayed the ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฒ๐๐ซ together using the ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฒ (๐ฆ๐๐ญ), all while surrounded in peaceful silence.
The core message of the ๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ค๐ celebration reminds us that Islam is not the kind of religion most people paint them to be; rather, it is a religion that respects humanity and embodies mercy, compassion, justice, and fairness towards everyone, especially the poor and needy, no matter their culture or social status. Through this immersive experience, it is now our responsibility to embrace diversity within the multicultural Philippines and to spread the word that we can co-exist with each other no matter what we believe, for we are meant to exist in this world full of love and kindness, bringing each other to a close spiritual relationship with our Creator.
