The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) welcomed the Mindanao-Japan Science & Technology Platform (MJ-STeP) on September 2, 2026, for a courtesy visit and discussions on potential areas of future collaboration between USeP and its Japanese partners.

The MJ-STeP delegation first visited the USeP Tagum-Mabini Campus, Mabini Unit, where they were welcomed by Dr. Shirley S. Villanueva, TMC Chancellor; Dr. Merlina H. Juruena, Director of the Research and Development Division; and Dr. Gilbert A. Importante, Deputy Director of the Office of Project Development and Linkages. The visit provided an opportunity for a brief courtesy meeting and discussion on possible areas of future engagement, particularly in research, development, agriculture, science and technology, and other areas of mutual interest.

The delegation then proceeded to the USeP Obrero Campus for a courtesy visit with Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr., University President, together with Dr. Adora P. Zerrudo, Director of the International Affairs Division, and Dr. Reynaldo M. Nogodula, International Affairs Officer. The meeting centered on strengthening linkages between USeP and MJ-STeP and exploring opportunities for future collaboration and joint initiatives.

The MJ-STeP delegation was composed of Mr. Yoshiaki Miwa, President of MJ-STeP, Former Ambassador of Japan to the Solomon Islands, and Former Consul General in Davao; Mr. Toyonobu Usuki, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Materials and Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sophia University; Dr. Myra Villareal, Assistant Professor, Department of Materials and Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sophia University; Mr. Fukai Yoshio, Ph.D., President, Earth & Human Corporation; Mr. Sugai Jun, Agricultural and Rural Development, Earth & Human Corporation; Ms. Ai Ishikawa, Consultant, Public Health/Nutrition, Earth & Human Corporation; and Ms. Yumiko Shimizu, Programme Manager, MJ-STeP.

The engagement provided a valuable platform for both sides to exchange ideas and explore potential areas of collaboration in science and technology, research and development, agriculture and rural development, public health and nutrition, education, capacity-building, and other areas of mutual interest.
