The Intellectual Property Management Unit (IPMU) serves as the university’s front line in protecting and managing intellectual property (IP) generated from research and development (R&D) activities. The Unit ensures that every innovation, invention, and creative work produced by the academic community receives appropriate protection under the law, paving the way for responsible utilization, commercialization, and societal benefit.

The protection of intellectual property in the Philippines is governed by Republic Act 8293, otherwise known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines (IP Code). This law defines the scope of intellectual property rights (IPR) and their protection under two main categories: Industrial Property Rights and Copyright and Related Rights.

Industrial Property Rights

Protect inventions, scientific and scholarly works, computer programs, trademarks, service marks, trade names, industrial designs, and utility models.

Copyright and Related Rights

Cover literary and artistic works such as journal publications, thesis and dissertation manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, cinematographic works, photographs, and other creative outputs.

Through these protection mechanisms, the IPMU ensures that the university’s intellectual assets are secured, properly documented, and strategically managed to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. The Unit also builds awareness among faculty, researchers, and students on the importance of IP in research, innovation, and commercialization.
